How should you prepare SAT Math formulas?

A formula list is only useful when you can recognize its situation, use its variables correctly, and check whether the result makes sense.

Short answer: Do not memorize formulas as isolated symbols. Group them by the relationships they describe, practise identifying the cues that call for each one, and work through problems that require choosing—not merely plugging in—the formula. Recognition comes before recall

Students often ask which formulas to memorize because a formula sheet feels concrete. The deeper problem is usually recognition: seeing a geometric relationship, a rate relationship, or a quadratic structure and knowing what information matters. You can recall a formula perfectly and still miss the question if the labels, units, or requested quantity are unclear.

For each formula or relationship you review, add three notes: what it describes, the visual or verbal cue that suggests it, and one common misapplication. This turns a flashcard from a symbol prompt into a decision prompt.

Study families of relationships

Organize study by families: linear relationships and rates, algebraic structure, functions and graphs, geometry and measurement, and data or probability. Within each family, ask how values relate rather than trying to create one giant stack of unrelated cards. A right-triangle relationship, for example, matters because of the diagram and the known sides—not because a formula is floating in memory.

Use a notebook page that pairs a relationship with a small sketch, unit reminder, and a one-sentence “when to use” cue. If a formula is provided in the test environment, still practise recognizing when it applies; availability does not replace interpretation.

Move quickly from notes to application

After a short review, solve several questions without looking at your notes. For each, say what relationship you chose and why before substituting values. Then check the units and the requested quantity. This exposes the difference between familiarity and dependable use.

Later, mix several families together. A labeled geometry drill can build knowledge, but a mixed set tests whether you can identify the correct relationship under realistic uncertainty.

Before substituting a number, ask: What does each variable mean here, and is this formula solving for the quantity the question actually asks for?
